Russia Issues Widespread Missile Alert Across 13 Regions
Russia experienced an unprecedented event on Friday, February 27th, when a 'missile danger' alert was simultaneously declared across at least 13 of its regions. Notably, many of these areas are not directly bordering Ukraine.
Widespread 'Missile Danger' Declared
Authorities in Tatarstan, Bashkortostan, Chuvashia, Udmurtia, Perm Krai, and the Samara, Ulyanovsk, Penza, Saratov, Orenburg, Sverdlovsk, Rostov, and Kursk regions issued warnings of a potential attack. This marks the first time such a regime has been implemented in at least eight of these regions since Russia's full-scale invasion of Ukraine began.
Evacuations and Conflicting Reports
In response to the alerts, public transport was halted in some cities, including Almetyevsk. Airports in Kazan, Izhevsk, and Samara's Kurumoch experienced evacuations. Chuvashia's government initially reported two missile attacks targeting the republic, claiming one was shot down and another changed course towards a neighboring region. However, this information was later retracted and stated as unconfirmed.
Telegram channels reported varying accounts of downed missiles. The 'Shot' channel claimed two Ukrainian 'Flamingo' missiles were shot down over Chuvashia, while the 'Radar po vsei Rossii' channel reported three missiles downed over Udmurtia, Perm Krai, and the Sea of Azov near Taganrog.
Damage Reported in Taganrog
In Taganrog, Rostov region, Governor Yuri Slepa reported that a balcony of a multi-story building on Tsiolkovsky Street was partially destroyed due to falling missile debris. Fortunately, no injuries were reported from this incident.
