Thailand Seeks New Oil Sources, Eyes Kazakhstan Amid Geopolitical Tensions

Thailand is actively seeking new oil suppliers to prevent potential shortages, driven by escalating geopolitical tensions in the Middle East. The country is exploring alternative energy routes to ensure its stability.

Thailand's Oil Reserves and Risks

According to Thailand's Minister of Foreign Affairs, the nation's current oil reserves are sufficient for only 95 to 100 days. The volatile situation in the Middle East significantly increases the risk of these reserves depleting prematurely. Consequently, Thailand has initiated negotiations with several countries, including Russia, Kazakhstan, Brazil, and Nigeria, to secure new oil supplies.

Diplomatic Engagements for Energy Security

Minister Sihasak has indicated that Russia has expressed readiness to supply oil, particularly as Russian oil tankers may become more accessible to the global market following potential easing of U.S. sanctions. Beyond Russia, Thailand is also prioritizing discussions with Brazil, Nigeria, and Kazakhstan. The Ministry of Energy will continue to pursue concrete agreements with these nations to bolster Thailand's energy security.
