Turkey Blames Israel for Middle East Conflict, Backs Qatar
Turkey's Foreign Minister Hakan Fidan has declared Ankara's unwavering support for Qatar, vowing to continue backing the nation amidst regional tensions. Fidan also condemned attacks on Iran's civilian infrastructure and population, denouncing them as unjustifiable.
Support for Qatar and Condemnation of Attacks
Speaking at a joint press conference with Qatari Prime Minister Mohammed bin Abdulrahman Al Thani, Fidan stated that Qatar, while acting as a mediator, became a target of attacks that continue to this day. "They were subjected to completely undeserved attacks, and these attacks are still ongoing," Fidan said. He conveyed the best wishes of the Turkish people and President Recep Tayyip Erdoğan to their Qatari counterparts. "We condemn and reject attacks targeting civilian infrastructure, disregarding the lives of civilians. Such attacks can never be justified under any circumstances. Turkey has always stood and will continue to stand with our brotherly Qatar," he added.
Regional Security and Diplomatic Efforts
Fidan emphasized that the ongoing conflict poses a threat to the security of all nations in the region and is causing global concern. He reported visiting Riyadh on March 18 at the invitation of Saudi Arabia, where he strongly reaffirmed solidarity with the targeted nations. An agreement was reached in Riyadh on joint efforts to quickly halt the attacks, establish a ceasefire, prevent the escalation of the conflict, and resolve the crisis through diplomatic channels.
Israel Identified as Primary Culprit
"We must openly state that the main culprit of this war, which has plunged our region into an unprecedented crisis, is, as you know, Israel," Fidan declared. He noted that during diplomatic negotiations, Israel's actions have not only turned the region into a larger battlefield but have also disrupted global stability.
The Turkish Foreign Minister also highlighted Iran's "historical responsibility." The US and Israel launched initial airstrikes against Iran on February 28. Following this, Tehran began launching missile and drone attacks on neighboring countries in the Persian Gulf and Israel. Iran stated that its targets were American military bases in the region. Iran's strikes hit oil facilities and tankers in several Persian Gulf countries. Azerbaijan and Cyprus, members of the European Union, were also affected by Iran's attacks. Amidst military operations by the US and Israel, Tehran effectively blocked traffic through the vital Strait of Hormuz for oil and gas supplies, claiming it was "under full control." This action led to an increase in energy prices.
