In a significant development amid heightened tensions with Iran, U.S. Navy Secretary John Phelan has been removed from his position. The decision was reportedly made by the White House and the Department of Defense, citing a need for new leadership.

Leadership Change Amidst Naval Blockade

Pentagon spokesperson Sean Parnell confirmed that Phelan was informed of the decision prior to its public announcement. While Parnell did not elaborate on the specific reasons for the dismissal, the move comes at a critical juncture. The U.S. has been intensifying its naval blockade against Iran, recently confiscating two vessels in the Strait of Hormuz.

Conflicting Interpretations of Naval Actions

Iran has characterized the seizure of the vessels as a violation of a peace agreement. However, the White House maintains that the action was justified due to the involvement of international shipping, refuting claims of a breach of peace.

The interim leadership of the Navy will be handled by Phelan's former deputy, Hung Cao.
