Young Women Climb Literary Monument in Astana, Sparking Public Outrage
A recent incident in Astana has sparked public outcry after a group of young women were filmed climbing on a monument dedicated to a revered Kazakh writer. The act, deemed disrespectful and ignorant by many, occurred in the Journalists' Alley, a public space honoring literary figures.
Disrespectful Act Captured on Video
The monument in question commemorates Beyimbet Mailin, one of three prominent figures of Kazakh literature whose statues are displayed in the alley, alongside Saken Seifullin and Ilyas Zhansugirov. A witness, journalist Duysenali Alimakyn, observed one of the young women perching on the neck of the Beyimbet Mailin statue, with her legs dangling. He captured the scene on video and shared it on social media.
Public Condemnation and Calls for Action
Alimakyn recounted his attempt to address the young women, asking if they knew who the figures represented. He was met with blank stares and a dismissive response, highlighting what he described as a profound lack of awareness and respect. The video quickly went viral, drawing widespread condemnation from netizens who viewed the act as an insult to Kazakh culture and history. Many demanded that authorities take action against those involved.
Official Response and Broader Implications
The press service of the Astana City Police Department has stated they are investigating the incident and will provide further comment. The situation has reignited discussions about the importance of promoting cultural values and fostering spiritual education among the youth in Kazakhstan.
