Astana-Qosshy LRT Project: Construction Details and Timeline Revealed
New details have emerged regarding the second phase of the Light Rail Transit (LRT) project connecting Astana and Qosshy. The construction timeline and specific aspects of the project were announced by City Transportation System (CTS), the capital's transport company.
Construction Timeline and Project Scope
According to project documents, the exact start date for the construction and installation work on the second phase of the LRT hinges on the approval of necessary permits and project materials. However, the implementation is tentatively scheduled to commence in the second quarter of 2026. The construction itself is expected to span approximately 68 months, which is nearly five years. The operational lifespan of the facility is projected to be around 100 years.
Route and Coverage Area
The second phase of the LRT will consist of two sections. The first section will cover the Saryarka, Nurа, and Esil districts of Astana, beginning from Kabanbay Batyr Avenue and extending through Syganak, Sh. Aitmatov streets, Turan, Saryarka, and Zhenis Avenues to the railway station. The second section will run from Kabanbay Batyr Avenue along the Karkaraly highway to the city limits. The total length of this route is approximately 26.5 kilometers. Of this, 25.2 kilometers will pass through Astana, while 1.3 kilometers will be within the territory of Qosshy city in the Akmola region.
Technical Specifications
Two additional depots will be constructed as part of the project. All lines in the second phase will be compatible with the first phase, forming a cross-shaped radial railway network. The maximum speed of the trains is expected to reach 80 km/h. Power will be supplied via a third rail at 750 V DC. The project also includes provisions for a gas supply system.
Environmental Considerations
The second phase of the project will pass approximately 510 meters from the Taldykol lake in Astana and will cross the Yesil River. It is noted that there are no water bodies in the section within the territory of Qosshy city.
Previously, Astana Mayor Zhenis Kassymbek had stated that the construction of the LRT line to Qosshy would begin in early 2026 and be completed within 1.5 years.
