Former Kazakh Official Appeals 6-Year Sentence for Corruption
Jansaya Omar, the former first deputy governor of the East Kazakhstan region, is appealing her six-year prison sentence handed down for corruption and fraud. The court's decision, which found her guilty of multiple offenses, is now under review.
Appeal Hearing Set
According to court records, Omar has filed an appeal against the verdict. The hearing is scheduled to take place on May 20 at 11:00 AM. Until then, Omar will remain in custody as her pre-trial detention measure.
Impact on Regional Administration
The sentencing of Omar has left a vacancy in the East Kazakhstan regional administration. Reports indicate that a new appointment has not yet been made. Officials stated that the decision on a replacement will be made after the appellate court's ruling. However, Omar's information has been removed from the 'Leadership' section of the regional administration's official website.
Charges and Sentence Details
On April 3, a district court in Oskemen found Jansaya Omar guilty of fraud and bribery. She was sentenced to six years in a medium-security facility and permanently barred from holding public office. Her Toyota Camry vehicle was also confiscated. The East Kazakhstan Regional Prosecutor's Office emphasized that Omar's actions undermined the foundations of public service and public trust.
Omar's Plea
During the trial, Jansaya Omar admitted her guilt but pleaded for leniency in her final statement, requesting her sentence be commuted to a fine. She expressed a desire to contribute to the state without being a burden and stated she would pay the fine, even if it meant incurring debt.
Reports of Omar's detention first emerged on February 13, 2026. At the time, official bodies only stated that the official was on temporary leave due to health reasons.
