Kazakhstan Oil Exports Unaffected by Druzhba Pipeline Drone Attack

A drone attack targeting a critical section of the Druzhba oil pipeline in Russia's Tatarstan Republic has raised questions about potential impacts on Kazakhstan's oil exports. However, Kazakhstan's Ministry of Energy has officially stated that the incident has not affected the country's oil transportation.

Incident at the 'Kaleykino' Station

A fire broke out at the 'Kaleykino' oil pumping station in Almetievsk on the night of February 23rd. Local residents reported hearing multiple explosions. According to the local administration, the fire started in an industrial zone after drone debris fell. Fortunately, there were no casualties or injuries.

The 'Kaleykino' station is one of the largest in the Transneft system. It receives, mixes, and stores oil from various regions before onward transmission through main pipelines. One of these routes feeds the Druzhba pipeline, which exports oil to Europe.

Official Ministry Statement

Kazakhstan's Ministry of Energy has reassured the public that the events in Tatarstan have had no impact on the nation's oil transit operations.

"Regarding the incident in Tatarstan, the ministry reports: this situation has not affected the process of transporting Kazakhstani oil. The acceptance of raw materials from shippers and their further pumping through the main pipeline system are being carried out in the normal mode, according to the established schedule. No restrictions on the transit or export of Kazakhstani oil have been recorded," the ministry's statement read.

While Kazakhstan's oil is not directly linked to the 'Kaleykino' station itself, it does pass through the broader system. Crude oil arriving in Russia via the Atyrau-Samara pipeline enters the Transneft main network and is then distributed to various destinations. 'Kaleykino' is considered a vital hub within this network.

Past Incidents and Alternative Routes

This incident follows previous concerns. Kazakhstan's Ministry of Foreign Affairs had previously expressed apprehension over attacks targeting three tankers en route to the Black Sea terminal. Additionally, due to the situation in the Red Sea, Kazakhstan's oil exports through the Caspian Pipeline Consortium (CPC) saw a 45% reduction in January.

These ongoing challenges have necessitated that Kazakhstan explore and adapt its oil supply routes.
