Kazakhstan Vehicle Tax Doubled: Citizens Express Concern Over System Errors

Several citizens in Kazakhstan have reported a significant and unexpected increase in their vehicle tax payments. What individuals calculated as approximately 15,000 tenge has, in some cases, ballooned to as much as 30,000 tenge when appearing on banking applications.

System Errors Cause Tax Hike

The issue appears to stem from an automated system error during the generation of electronic tax invoices. In the Kostanay district of Kostanay region, the system reportedly doubled the calculated tax amounts. This widespread miscalculation was then reflected in banking applications, forcing vehicle owners to spend considerable time and effort to rectify the incorrect charges.

While the specific incident was noted in Kostanay, there are concerns that similar errors could be occurring across the country.

Digitalization Challenges

Experts point out that the transition of vehicle tax calculations to an electronic system has revealed several shortcomings. These issues contradict the digitalization goals outlined in the "Digital Kazakhstan" state program, according to an analysis by "Nasha Gazeta." The problems highlight the need for more robust testing and oversight in the implementation of digital government services.

Aging Fleet Adds to Burden

Adding to the frustration, the aging vehicle fleet in Kazakhstan presents another challenge for car owners. Due to the high cost of new vehicles, many citizens are compelled to continue using older cars. In this context, errors in the tax system can lead to public anger and erode trust in the efficiency of government processes.

This situation underscores the importance of accurate and reliable digital systems for public services, especially when they directly impact citizens' finances.
