Kyiv Supermarket Siege: Gunman Kills Six, Injures Fifteen
A shocking incident unfolded in Kyiv on Saturday when an unidentified man opened fire on a street before entering a supermarket and taking people hostage. The violent episode resulted in the deaths of six individuals and left fifteen others injured, according to the head of Ukraine's capital, Vitali Klitschko.
Details of the Incident
The events took place in the Holosiivskyi district of Kyiv. Witnesses reported seeing a man armed with an automatic rifle running through residential courtyards, firing at random passersby. The motive behind the gunman's actions remains unclear.
Hostages and Casualties
After entering the supermarket, the man took several people hostage. Among those injured was a four-year-old child, who was transported to the hospital. Medical assistance was provided to the adult victims. The supermarket's security guard was among those held hostage.
Tragically, a 30-year-old woman later succumbed to her injuries, becoming the sixth fatality from the shooting.
Law Enforcement Response
Special police units stormed the store in an attempt to apprehend the suspect. However, the gunman resisted, firing at law enforcement and refusing to engage with negotiators. He was eventually neutralized. There is speculation that he may have fired at security forces and potentially detonated a grenade in his final moments.
Information on the Perpetrator
Ukraine's Prosecutor General, Ruslan Kravchenko, identified the shooter as 58-year-old Dmitry Vasilchenko, a native of Moscow. Investigations revealed that Vasilchenko possessed a registered firearm with the Ministry of Internal Affairs of Ukraine. He was a Ukrainian citizen who had previously resided in Bakhmut, Donetsk region, and later in Kyiv's Holosiivskyi district.
According to media reports, Vasilchenko may have previously served in the Russian army with the rank of lieutenant colonel. His social media profiles reportedly contained posts supporting the war against Ukraine.
