Mexico Travel Alert: Foreign Governments Urge Citizens to Stay Indoors Amid Unrest
Following the death of a prominent drug cartel leader, Mexico is experiencing significant unrest, prompting several foreign governments to issue urgent travel advisories for their citizens. The escalating violence has led to widespread disruptions and a call for increased caution.
'Red Code' Declared in Jalisco
The unrest began after Nemesio Oseguera Cervantes, also known as 'El Mencho' and the leader of the Jalisco New Generation Cartel (CJNG), was killed during a military operation. In response to the ensuing chaos, Governor Pablo Lemus of Jalisco declared a 'red code' state of emergency. This measure involved road closures, reports of arson, and the deployment of military units into cities.
Transportation Services Halted
The deteriorating security situation has severely impacted transportation networks. Mexican airlines have canceled several flights to and from Jalisco. Additionally, intercity bus services across the country have been disrupted. Major incidents were concentrated in the cities of Guadalajara and Puerto Vallarta.
Violence Spreads to Other Regions
The wave of violence has not been confined to Jalisco, extending into the states of Michoacán, Colima, and Tamaulipas. The U.S. Embassy advised its citizens to remain vigilant, avoid areas with law enforcement activity, and stay indoors whenever possible. The Canadian government specifically reported a 'stay-at-home' order in effect for Puerto Vallarta. Other nations, including the United Kingdom, Australia, and India, have also warned their citizens to enhance their safety precautions.
