Former Kazakh President Nursultan Nazarbayev has publicly acknowledged that his previous actions concerning his former son-in-law, Rakhat Aliyev, were a "big mistake." This reflection was shared in an interview with filmmaker Oliver Stone in 2021.

Aliyev's Misconduct and Nazarbayev's Regret

Nazarbayev detailed how Aliyev, during his tenure as head of the Financial Police, allegedly abused his power to pressure businesses and amass wealth. The former president stated he felt compelled to intervene, a decision he found personally difficult due to his familial relationship and trust in Aliyev. Oliver Stone acknowledged the challenging nature of the situation for Nazarbayev.

Family Pressure and Decisive Action

In a separate interview from 2015, Nazarbayev also spoke about the reactions from his relatives regarding the Aliyev case. He admitted that holding his son-in-law accountable was not easy, especially considering his three grandchildren. However, he emphasized that the situation had become clear and had gone too far, necessitating action. Nazarbayev reportedly warned all his relatives, children, and friends that no one was above the law.
