Almaty, Kazakhstan – The city of Almaty erupted in celebration as Olympic champion Mikhail Shaidorov returned home, proudly carrying the gold medal from the 2026 Olympic Games. A jubilant crowd gathered at the Almaty International Airport to give the hometown hero a hero's welcome.

A Hero's Welcome Awaits

Shaidorov, accompanied by his father, arrived from Astana to a heartwarming reception. Over a hundred residents, waving national flags and holding bouquets, assembled to congratulate the young athlete on his monumental achievement. The atmosphere was festive, complete with music and a specially prepared program, including a traditional dastarkhan (table spread), underscoring the city's pride in its champion.

Shaidorov Expresses His Gratitude

Overwhelmed with emotion, Shaidorov shared his joy with the gathered crowd. "I'm finally home! It's been a long journey, and now I'm back in Almaty, my hometown – the place where I was born, grew up, and will continue to live. My emotions are boundless. I am sincerely grateful to everyone who came to welcome me! It's impossible to describe how wonderful it feels to be welcomed like this upon returning to my city," he said.

A Special Gift for the Champion

As a token of appreciation for his remarkable performance at the Games, Shaidorov was presented with a unique gift: a carpet featuring his portrait. This gesture highlighted the deep admiration and respect the city holds for its Olympic victor.

Shaidorov's triumphant return follows his victory at the Winter Olympic Games held in Italy, where the 21-year-old figure skater clinched the gold medal in the men's singles competition. His achievement was previously recognized by President Kassym-Jomart Tokayev, who congratulated Shaidorov and later awarded him the 'Barys' Order in Astana.
