It turns out that drinking coffee immediately upon waking might be counterproductive, according to British pharmacist Rojeena Shams Natery. She explains that this common habit can exacerbate dehydration and interfere with the natural function of hormones responsible for alertness.

The Dehydration Factor

Natery points out that if the body isn't rehydrated after sleep, for instance, by drinking a glass of water, it can lead to headaches, weakness, and fatigue. This is because the body naturally increases cortisol levels in the morning to help us wake up. Consuming caffeine at this precise moment can disrupt this natural process.

When is the Best Time for Coffee?

To avoid these negative effects, the expert recommends drinking a glass of water first to restore the body's fluid balance. Coffee consumption should ideally be delayed for 60 to 90 minutes after waking. This timeframe allows the hormonal system to stabilize, ensuring that caffeine's effects are gentler and more beneficial.

Other Morning Habits to Consider

The pharmacist also highlighted other morning habits that can impact how you feel. For example, a sugary breakfast can cause blood sugar spikes, while exercising on an empty stomach might deplete glucose reserves and increase the body's stress response.

Furthermore, Natery advises against checking emails or social media immediately after waking. This can lead to an early release of dopamine, potentially causing mental fatigue later in the day. To feel truly alert, she encourages a more relaxed start to your morning routine.
