Ancient Rock Carvings in Zhambyl Region Reveal Millennia of History
Kazakhstani scientists have announced the discovery of previously unknown ancient rock carvings in the Burkhansai Gorge, located in the Zhualy district of the Zhambyl region. This significant find, shedding light on millennia of human history, has only recently been revealed to the public.
A Glimpse into Ancient Life
The unearthed petroglyphs span a vast historical period, dating from the Bronze Age through the Early Iron Age, Middle Ages, and up to the modern era. Among the depicted scenes are single-humped camels, ibexes, and deer hunting. In total, archaeologists have identified over a thousand ancient images.
Unlocking a Thousand-Year-Old Inscription
Adding to the historical significance, an inscription in the Old Turkic script was also discovered. Experts estimate this inscription to be approximately a thousand years old. Vladimir Tishin, a specialist in Turkology, assisted in deciphering the text, which translates to "My name is Aba."
Future Research and Protection
Following the comprehensive study of these petroglyphs, scientists plan to publish a dedicated monograph. They also intend to propose that this significant archaeological site be placed under state protection. Boris Zheleznyakov, a leading researcher at the Institute of Archaeology, noted that people inhabited the Burkhansai Gorge for four thousand years, with evidence of newer carvings being placed over older ones.
This discovery adds another layer to Kazakhstan's rich archaeological heritage, following recent finds such as the approximately 250 valuable artifacts unearthed at the medieval city of Saraishyk in the Atyrau region.
