Kazakhstan Joins International Effort to Seize Major Synthetic Drug Haul

Almaty, Kazakhstan – A large-scale anti-drug operation, conducted in collaboration with international partners, has led to the seizure of a substantial amount of synthetic drugs in Almaty. The National Security Committee (KNB) confirmed the operation took place in January.

Key Seizure and Arrest

During the operation, Kazakh authorities arrested a citizen of Kazakhstan who was in possession of 8 kilograms of methamphetamine, a potent synthetic narcotic. This significant bust has initiated pre-trial investigations under Article 297, Part 3 of the Criminal Code, which pertains to the illegal acquisition, storage, transportation, and distribution of drugs and psychotropic substances.

Suspect Detained

Following his arrest, a court ordered the suspect to be held in custody as a pre-trial detention measure. Further details regarding the case are being withheld from public disclosure in accordance with Article 201, Part 1 of the Criminal Procedure Code.

Previous Major Drug Busts

This operation follows a series of significant drug seizures in Kazakhstan. In September 2025, the KNB announced the confiscation of the largest cocaine shipment in the country's history, totaling 13 tons and 183 kilograms. This shipment was reportedly intended for transit to third countries via Kazakhstan.

Subsequently, in February 2026, a court trial commenced in connection with this record-breaking cocaine transit case. The proceedings involve foreign nationals who face potential life imprisonment sentences.
