Kazakhstan MP Urges Faster Construction of Shorter Astana-Zhezkazgan Highway

A proposal to expedite the construction of a new highway linking Astana and Zhezkazgan through Korgalzhyn has been put forward, promising to significantly reduce travel time and costs between the two cities.

New Route's Significance

Member of Parliament Asylbek Nuralin has formally requested First Vice-Prime Minister Roman Sklyar to include the construction of this new highway in the national transport infrastructure development plan. The proposed route, passing through the Korgalzhyn district, is expected to dramatically shorten the distance, thereby cutting transportation expenses and fostering regional growth.

Current Challenges

The existing road network between Zhezkazgan and Astana, which typically goes via Karaganda, is considerably longer and features aging road surfaces with limited capacity. This current route extends travel times and increases logistical costs, a problem particularly felt in the newly formed Abai and Ulytau regions.

Projected Benefits

The new transport corridor is estimated to reduce the distance between Astana and Ulytau from approximately 860 kilometers to around 450 kilometers. This development is anticipated to expand opportunities for local producers, improve the quality of medical and educational services, and potentially increase tourism by over 50,000 visitors annually. The project is projected to enhance the lives of nearly 30,000 residents across 28 settlements.

The deputy has urged for the inclusion of this vital route in the national plan and for directives to be issued to the relevant state bodies to commence work.
