Russian General Killed in Moscow Region Car Bombing, Ukraine Link Suspected

A top Russian military official, Lieutenant General Alexander Maximtsev, chief of staff of the Aerospace Forces, has been killed in a car explosion in Balashikha, a city in the Moscow region. The incident, which occurred on June 9th around 5:30 AM, has raised significant questions and is being investigated as a potential targeted attack.

Explosive Device Detonates

The explosion involved a BMW X3 vehicle parked near a residential building on Aviatorov Street in the Aviatorov microdistrict. The driver, identified as General Maximtsev, sustained fatal injuries and died at the scene. Authorities have launched a criminal investigation and ordered several forensic examinations to determine the cause of the blast.

Pattern of Attacks Near Military Residences

General Maximtsev held a prominent position as the chief of staff of the Aerospace Forces and first deputy commander-in-chief. He was visible in a photograph from 2018, underscoring his senior role within the Russian military hierarchy.

The Aviatorov microdistrict is known to house high-ranking military personnel. Significantly, the explosion occurred approximately 350 meters from the building where another high-ranking officer, Lieutenant General Yaroslav Moskalik, deputy chief of the Main Operational Directorate of the Russian General Staff, was killed in a similar car explosion in April 2025. This proximity and the nature of the incidents suggest a potential pattern of targeted attacks.

The investigation is ongoing to uncover the full circumstances surrounding General Maximtsev's death and to determine any potential connections to external actors or previous incidents.
