Saudi Arabia Warns Iran on Attacks: US Bases and Retaliation Possible
Saudi Arabia has issued a strong warning to Iran concerning recent attacks targeting energy infrastructure in the Persian Gulf region. Riyadh has indicated that if Iran continues its assaults on energy facilities, Saudi Arabia may grant the U.S. military access to its bases and take retaliatory actions.
Diplomatic Engagements Amidst Tensions
According to reports, Saudi Arabia's Minister of Foreign Affairs, Faisal bin Farhan Al Saud, met with his Iranian counterpart, Abbas Araghchi, this week. During this crucial meeting, Riyadh clearly communicated its stance on the ongoing attacks. The Saudi minister emphasized the kingdom's openness to any mediation efforts aimed at de-escalating the situation in the Persian Gulf.
Iran's Response and Demands
Confirmation of a phone conversation between Saudi Arabia and Tehran was provided by two Iranian sources. In this discussion, Riyadh urged Tehran to cease attacks directed at Saudi Arabia and neighboring Persian Gulf countries. However, Iran reportedly maintained its position, asserting that the attacks were not aimed at Gulf nations but rather at American military bases located within their territories.
One of the sources revealed Iran's demands in response to the situation. Tehran has reportedly called for the closure of American bases in the region and for certain Persian Gulf countries to stop providing intelligence to Washington that could be used for attacks against Iran.
Escalation and Counter-Attacks
The situation has seen an escalation, with reports indicating that the U.S. and Israel began striking targets within Iranian territory, including Tehran, on February 28th. There have been reports of civilian infrastructure damage and casualties. In response, Iran has reportedly launched retaliatory strikes targeting Israeli territory and U.S. military installations in the Middle East.
