Kazakhstan Constitutional Reform: Citizens Urged to Participate in Referendum

Astana hosted a significant gathering focused on constitutional reform, bringing together representatives from various ethnic and cultural associations, public figures, and politicians. The central theme of the event was the critical importance of widespread citizen engagement in the upcoming referendum.

The meeting saw participation from specialists at the House of Friendship, chairpersons of diverse ethnic and cultural associations, members of the youth wing of the Assembly of the People of Kazakhstan, students, and the Council of Mothers. The discussion was inclusive, drawing in representatives from education, healthcare, business, and construction sectors, ensuring a broad spectrum of societal views were represented.

Key Discussions on Constitutional Changes

Prominent figures, including well-known bloggers, city council deputies, and business leaders, shared their perspectives. Senator Bibigul Jeksenbay of the Parliament of Kazakhstan provided a detailed explanation of the core provisions of the constitutional amendments. She offered a comparative analysis, contrasting the old constitution from 1995 with the proposed new changes, and also addressed issues of political modernization.

Emphasis on Civic Duty and Participation

The event was moderated by Saniya Zhusupova, head of the Astana branch of the national coalition "For a People's Constitution of a Just and Prosperous Kazakhstan." Zhusupova underscored the significance of an active civic stance and participation in socio-political processes. "First and foremost, we are all citizens of the Republic of Kazakhstan and are obliged to fulfill our civic duty. We must all go to the referendum polling stations with our friends, colleagues, and Assembly members and cast our votes," she stated.

Engaging the Youth

A particular focus of the meeting was on interaction with the younger generation. Representatives from the Assembly addressed questions concerning the future of the youth wing and its role in public life, highlighting the creation of opportunities for youth development and self-realization.

This discussion underscores a national effort to inform and mobilize the populace ahead of a crucial vote that will shape the country's future legal framework.
