Kazakhstan Families Demand Eviction from New State-Program Apartments Due to Mold

Families in the city of Derzhavinsk, Akmola region, Kazakhstan, are sounding the alarm over the condition of their new homes, obtained through a state housing program. Residents report that the newly constructed apartments are plagued by mold and dampness, making them unfit for habitation.

Unlivable Conditions in New Homes

The families, including those with multiple children and incomplete families, received their apartment keys in the winter of 2024. However, with the arrival of spring rains, water began seeping into the apartments, particularly affecting those on the fifth floor. Residents were shocked to discover significant cracks and holes in the roofs.

"It's impossible to live here: it's constantly damp, with mold. It's the same in other apartments, even on the fifth floors, there's water, mold, and severe dampness. They came to inspect recently, and today too, but they didn't enter the apartments, just talked. We want to exchange these apartments because it's a health hazard, it's impossible to live here," said resident Irina Lysenko.

Ongoing Issues and Promises

Despite multiple commission visits and even a directive from the regional governor to resolve the issue, the walls and corners of the apartments remain covered in mold. No alternative housing has been offered to the affected families.

Representatives from "Mega Stroy Group" LLP have assured residents that all defects will be rectified within the next month. "To fully and qualitatively repair the entire roof area, we had to wait for stable, favorable weather conditions. Work is now proceeding at an accelerated pace. Once the roof is completed and confirmed to be fully sealed, our teams will begin addressing the damage inside the homes," stated Kenzhesary Kabkenov, a representative of the construction company.
