Kazakhstani Judge Accused of Bias at Olympics; NOC Responds

A controversy has erupted surrounding Nadezhda Paretskaya, a judge from Kazakhstan officiating at the Olympic figure skating competition. Paretskaya stands accused of awarding excessively high scores to Russian athletes while giving lower marks to competitors from the United States and Japan.

Allegations of Unfair Scoring

According to a report by Forbes, Paretskaya allegedly placed Russian skater Adelia Petrosyan in first place despite significant errors in her quadruple jump. While such a high score might be justifiable if other competitors also made similar major mistakes, the publication suggests that other athletes performed at a superior level.

International Skating Union's Stance

A representative from the International Skating Union (ISU) has addressed the scoring discrepancies, characterizing them as a normal aspect of judging. The ISU noted that it is standard practice to disregard the highest and lowest scores for each element. The union expressed confidence that the evaluations were conducted fairly and honestly.

National Olympic Committee's Clarification

The National Olympic Committee (NOC) of Kazakhstan has stated that the appointment of judges for the Olympic Games falls outside its jurisdiction. These responsibilities are entirely within the purview of international sports federations, specifically the ISU for figure skating. The ISU independently determines the pool of specialists authorized to work at the Olympics.

The NOC further explained that the ISU selects candidates based on their international judge category, verified qualifications, and experience in major international competitions. National Olympic Committees do not influence this process or participate in decision-making. Judges at the Olympic Games operate as independent technical specialists adhering to ISU regulations.

This situation highlights the complex and often scrutinized nature of judging in elite international sports.
