World Population to Hit 10 Billion by 2050: Global Impacts Ahead

The Earth is on the cusp of significant demographic shifts. United Nations experts forecast that the global population will approach 10 billion people by the year 2050. This projected growth could place immense pressure on worldwide resources, infrastructure, and healthcare systems, potentially leading to global crises.

Currently, the world's population exceeds 8 billion. According to UN projections, this figure is expected to increase by another 2 billion within the next 25 years. Factors such as increased life expectancy, ongoing urbanization, and rising migration are contributing to this rapid expansion. While the average life expectancy stands at 73 years today, it may reach 77 years in 25 years, potentially leading to a two-billion-strong elderly population.

Africa's Population Set to Double

Experts indicate that the global demographic landscape is rapidly changing. The majority of current population growth is concentrated in lower-income regions. Projections suggest that Africa's population will double by 2050. Meanwhile, India and China, currently the most populous nations, are developing in different directions. The population of the People's Republic of China is expected to continue declining, while India is projected to see growth for several more decades.

Europe Faces Population Decline

Conversely, Europe is experiencing a different trend. Experts predict that by 2050, the population in 26 European countries will decrease by an average of 15%. Among these nations are Bulgaria, Bosnia and Herzegovina, Hungary, Latvia, and Croatia. The current birth rate in European countries is below 2 children per woman. Experts note that for many families, having children has become a significant financial challenge.

Switzerland Considers Population Cap

Switzerland is taking concrete steps to manage population growth. On June 14, the country will hold a nationwide referendum. Residents will vote on a proposal to limit the population to 10 million. If the population reaches 9.5 million, authorities will be obligated to tighten migration policies and potentially even revoke the agreement on free movement with the European Union. Public discontent stems from issues such as traffic congestion, a lack of school places, and housing shortages.

Experts emphasize that continued population growth on the planet will place a heavy burden on natural resources, infrastructure, and healthcare systems, potentially triggering global crises.
