Kazakhstan's deadline for paying the 2025 vehicle tax is fast approaching on April 1st. Missing this deadline could lead to penalties, making it crucial for vehicle owners to understand the calculation and payment process.

Who Pays and When?

Individual vehicle owners are required to pay their car tax no later than April 1, 2026. This tax is calculated individually for each vehicle and its amount is directly linked to the engine's displacement volume.

How is the Tax Calculated?

For the 2025 tax year, the calculation will use the 2025 monthly calculated index (MCI), which was set at 3,692 tenge. (Note: The current MCI is 4,325 tenge). Generally, owners of vehicles with larger engines will face a higher tax amount.

To determine the exact tax amount, individuals can utilize a special calculator available on the State Revenue Committee's website. This tool requires information such as the period of vehicle ownership, vehicle type, and engine displacement.

Changes Effective from 2026

Under the new Tax Code, several changes concerning vehicle tax will be implemented starting January 1, 2026. For instance, passenger cars that have been in use for 10-20 years will have a coefficient of 0.7 applied, while those over 20 years old will have a coefficient of 0.5. These adjusted amounts will be calculated in 2027.

Additionally, the tax rates for passenger cars with engine displacements exceeding 3000 cubic centimeters, manufactured or imported into Kazakhstan after December 31, 2013, have been abolished.

Farmers will benefit from specific exemptions for pickup trucks, with each farm being eligible for a tax exemption on one pickup truck.

Vehicle categories will now be determined based on the information in the registration certificate. Furthermore, to simplify tax reporting, the obligation to calculate current payments for vehicle tax has been removed.
