Kazakhstan Cold Snap: Schools in Two Regions Shift to Remote Learning

Students in the Pavlodar region and the city of Semey will be moving to remote learning starting February 25th due to severe winter weather. This decision impacts students from grades 1-11 attending the first shift and first and second-year college students.

Harsh Winter Forecast

Meteorologists predict extremely cold temperatures across these northern and eastern regions of Kazakhstan. In the Pavlodar region, forecasts for February 25th indicate clear skies with north-easterly winds. Overnight temperatures are expected to plummet to -33 to -38 degrees Celsius, with daytime temperatures ranging from -23 to -28 degrees Celsius. The city of Pavlodar itself will experience similar conditions, with lows of -35 to -37 degrees Celsius at night and -24 to -26 degrees Celsius during the day.

Abay Region Conditions

The Abay region is also bracing for frigid weather, with no precipitation expected. However, fog may form in some areas. Winds will blow from the northeast, with gusts reaching 9-14 m/s, and up to 15-20 m/s in the southern and central parts. Overnight temperatures are forecast to be between -30 to -35 degrees Celsius, potentially dropping to -38 degrees Celsius in the north and east. Daytime temperatures will hover around -20 to -25 degrees Celsius. In Semey, nighttime temperatures are predicted to be -30 to -32 degrees Celsius, and daytime temperatures -20 to -22 degrees Celsius.

This move to online learning follows a similar announcement for Astana, where students in grades 0-9 attending the first shift were also scheduled for remote classes on February 25th.
