Kazakhstan Considers Reintroducing Traditional School Exams

Kazakhstan's education system may be on the verge of significant changes regarding how student performance is evaluated. The Ministry of Education is currently conducting a thorough review of the current system of cumulative assessments (BJB) and quarter-end assessments (TJB), sparking discussions about the potential reintroduction of traditional written assignments.

Reviewing Current Assessment Methods

According to Minister of Education Zhyldyz Suleimenova, the ministry plans a phased reconsideration of existing assessment methods. The Committee for Secondary Education is analyzing assignments and student responses across all grades to determine the impact of BJB and TJB on learning outcomes, teacher workload, and the overall educational process.

Potential Return of Traditional Assignments

While the current criteria-based assessment system is integrated into educational standards, the Minister noted that there is room for more extensive use of traditional written tasks within the learning process. This could mean the return of assessment types long familiar to schools, such as dictations, summaries, essays, and control works.

"We believe we will gradually move away from BJB and TJB. However, this requires a solid foundation and comprehensive analysis," stated Zhyldyz Suleimenova.

Phased Implementation Planned

The ministry is not rushing to implement these changes. The effectiveness of the current system will be studied in depth first. Given that BJB and TJB have been in use in schools for several years, any alteration is expected to directly affect both teachers' work and students' learning experiences.
