Student Loses Arm in Construction Accident While Working Part-Time in Semey
A devastating accident occurred at a construction site in Semey, where a student working a part-time job lost his arm after it became caught in a concrete mixer machine. The young man recounted that he slipped, and his arm was pulled into the machinery.
A Fateful Slip
The student described the harrowing moments leading to the injury: "My leg slipped, and I stuck my hand into the apparatus. But I pulled it out immediately. When I looked at my arm, I almost fainted. I fell back, supporting myself with that hand. I immediately ran outside. I looked and my arm was gone," he recounted.
Medical Intervention and Recovery
The injured student was rushed to the hospital. Doctors determined that due to the severity of the injury, it was impossible to save the limb, necessitating an amputation below the shoulder. The patient's condition is currently reported as stable. He will require extensive rehabilitation and a prosthesis in the future.
Employer Accountability Under Scrutiny
Relatives of the student stated that he was not officially employed and had not yet signed an employment contract. They allege that the employer failed to provide adequate safety measures and proper instructions. The company has not yet issued a statement regarding the incident. The labor inspectorate is currently investigating the circumstances surrounding the accident.
"An order to investigate this accident was issued on June 3, 2026. The investigation will be conducted within 10 working days. After the investigation report on the work-related accident is compiled, the collected materials will be sent to law enforcement agencies," stated Temirlan Amirtayev, State Labor Inspector for the Abai Region.
This incident highlights critical concerns regarding workplace safety for temporary and student workers, emphasizing the need for thorough safety protocols and formal employment agreements.
