US War Against Iran Cost Double Official Estimates, Reaching $50 Billion
The United States' military engagement with Iran, codenamed "Epic Defiance," has incurred costs far exceeding official estimates, with the total expenditure reaching approximately $50 billion. This figure is nearly double the amount initially reported by the U.S. Treasury.
Unveiling the True Financial Burden
While the U.S. Department of Defense's finance director, Jules Hurst, previously informed congressmen of a $25 billion figure, sources from CBS News indicate this accounting failed to include the substantial costs associated with destroyed and damaged military equipment and bases.
Key Expenditure Areas
A significant portion of the increased spending is attributed to the continuous replenishment of ammunition. The loss of drones alone accounts for nearly $720 million. Specifically, at least 24 MQ-9 Reaper reconnaissance and attack drones, each valued at $30 million, were lost during the operations.
Beyond munitions and drones, additional expenses encompass fuel, troop transportation to the region, and the deployment of military infrastructure. These costs are borne not only by the Pentagon but also by the U.S. Department of Homeland Security, according to Mark Cancian, a senior advisor at the Center for Strategic and International Studies (CSIS).
Restoration Efforts and Future Strategies
Cancian estimates that restoring the expended arsenals will require several years. Senator Chris Coons described the official $25 billion estimate as a significant understatement, noting it did not factor in the costs of maintaining troops in the region for two months.
The article also touches upon past diplomatic and military considerations. Former U.S. President Donald Trump reportedly rejected a peace proposal that involved opening the Strait of Hormuz to facilitate negotiations on Iran's nuclear program. Instead, The Wall Street Journal reported that Trump directed preparations for a long-term naval blockade aimed at weakening Iran's economy through oil export restrictions.
Furthermore, contingency plans were being considered for potential strikes using advanced hypersonic Dark Eagle missiles and deploying special forces to seize Iranian uranium storage sites, should Tehran remain defiant.
