Astana LRT Payment System Details Revealed: How Much Will It Cost?

Astana is gearing up for the launch of its much-anticipated Light Rail Transit (LRT) system, with details on the passenger payment system now unveiled. The City Transportation Systems (CTS) company has provided insights into how commuters will pay for their journeys on the new urban transit network.

A Closed Payment System with Turnstiles

Unlike traditional bus services, Astana's LRT will feature a closed payment system utilizing turnstiles. This means passengers must pay for their fare before gaining access to the platform, similar to how metro systems operate. This approach aims to streamline boarding and ensure all passengers have paid for their travel.

No Inspectors, Just Technology

Following the implementation of contactless payments on Kazakhstan's buses, inspectors were reintroduced to verify fares. However, the LRT system will not employ such inspectors. Access is strictly controlled by the turnstiles, which will be equipped with modern payment terminals supporting rapid payment methods to minimize queues.

Fare Costs and Concessions

The standard fare for a single LRT journey is set at 200 tenge. The CTS has also confirmed that concessionary tariffs will be available for specific categories of citizens, including pensioners, individuals with disabilities, and other eligible groups. Further details on these reduced fares are expected to be released by CTS soon.

Ticket Offices for Assistance

While the LRT trains are undergoing comprehensive testing, CTS has been actively recruiting cashiers. These staff members will provide passenger services, including selling and topping up transport cards, and offering general assistance. Each station will have a dedicated ticket office area where passengers can purchase or recharge the transport cards used for turnstile access.

Extensive Testing Underway

Currently, extensive testing is being conducted, involving all 19 train sets simultaneously. The trial operation of the Astana LRT line has been ongoing for seven months. The city administration previously confirmed that the project is proceeding according to schedule, with passenger transportation slated to commence this spring.
