Astana's LRT: How Fast Can You Travel From Airport to Train Station?

Astana is set to revolutionize its urban transport with the upcoming launch of its Light Rail Transit (LRT) system. This new development promises a significant upgrade for residents and visitors, drastically reducing travel times across the capital.

The most anticipated benefit is the journey between Astana International Airport and the 'Nurly Zhol' train station. This route, covering 18 stations, is expected to take approximately 40 minutes once the LRT is fully operational. This offers a considerable time saving compared to existing transport options, especially during peak traffic hours.

LRT Speed and Frequency

According to City Transportation Systems (CTS), the LRT trains will operate at speeds between 40 and 50 kilometers per hour. The time between stops will range from 1.5 to 3 minutes, ensuring a smooth and efficient ride. Passengers can expect trains to arrive every 5 to 10 minutes, minimizing wait times.

Connecting Key City Points

Beyond the airport-to-station link, the LRT will also serve other vital areas. For instance, the trip from Nazarbayev University to the 'Sygynak' station, located near the Abu Dhabi Plaza complex, will take just 12 minutes. This is significantly faster than the estimated 18 minutes by car, highlighting the system's potential to alleviate road congestion in the Esil and Nura districts.

Fare System and Station Amenities

While the exact fare for the LRT has not yet been finalized, CTS is developing an electronic payment system. This system will also allow passengers to track train movements on a map. All 18 stations are designed with passenger convenience and safety in mind, featuring ticket zones, automated systems, waiting areas with retail spaces, restrooms, and platforms equipped with safety barriers. Escalators and elevators will be available to ensure accessibility for all passengers, including those with limited mobility.

Future Expansion Plans

Looking ahead, there are plans to extend the LRT network. In October 2025, Astana Mayor Zhenis Kassymbek mentioned the possibility of extending the line to the city of Kosshy. Construction for this new segment could begin as early as the start of 2026, with parts of the route running above ground.

The LRT system is currently undergoing its testing phase, which began on September 29. City Transportation Systems (CTS) has also initiated recruitment for operational roles, with 39 positions currently available.
