Atyrau-Oral Road Upgrade Delayed Amid Budget Shortfalls

Plans to expand and fully renovate the Atyrau-Oral highway, notorious as one of Kazakhstan's most dangerous roads, have been postponed due to budget deficits. The announcement comes from KazAvtoZhol National Company.

Road Conditions and Repair Plans

The 492-kilometer road, originally built in the 1970s, is currently classified as a third-category highway. Despite numerous complaints from drivers about its poor and hazardous condition, the much-needed expansion and complete reconstruction have been put on hold.

Instead, authorities are prioritizing medium repair works across various sections of the road. These repairs are estimated to cost over 48 billion tenge.

Why Reconstruction is on Hold

KazAvtoZhol stated that the development of project and estimate documentation for the full reconstruction has been deferred. This decision is attributed to the need to complete previously initiated projects and a general lack of sufficient budget funds.

An order has been issued to the Ministry of Transport to postpone the preparation of design and estimate documentation for the Atyrau-Oral highway reconstruction, starting from 2024.

For the section between kilometers 5 and 95, the design documentation is still under development. A tender to select a contractor will only be announced after the project undergoes expert review.

The Atyrau-Oral highway frequently makes headlines due to fatal traffic accidents. Drivers have been advocating for the road to be upgraded to a four-lane Category I highway, arguing that its current width is insufficient for the growing volume of traffic.
