Kazakhstan Discovers Vast Oil and Gas Reserves in Syrdarya Basin
Kazakhstan's energy sector is poised for a significant boost following the discovery of substantial hydrocarbon reserves in the Syrdarya basin, located in the southern part of the country. Preliminary estimates suggest potential resources exceeding 1 billion tons of oil and gas, a finding that could dramatically enhance the nation's energy independence and economic prospects.
Vast Potential in the Syrdarya Basin
According to Kanat Yerubayev, acting chairman of the Committee for Geology, the estimated hydrocarbon resources in the Syrdarya basin surpass 1 billion tons. These extensive geological surveys, initiated in 2024 and slated for completion in 2026, hold the promise of increasing Kazakhstan's proven oil reserves by over 25% if the projections are confirmed.
State Investment and Regional Discoveries
The geological exploration efforts are being funded by the state budget, with approximately 240 billion tenge allocated for state geological research projects over the next three years. Beyond the Syrdarya basin, significant hydrocarbon potential has also been identified in the North-Torgai, Shu-Sarysu, and Aral basins, with estimated resources ranging from 1 billion to 1.1 billion tons.
Developing State Geology
Yerubayev also highlighted that 50% of the funds generated from signature bonuses and auctions for subsoil use rights will be directed towards developing state geology and its infrastructure. Currently, Kazakhstan's state reserves are estimated at over 4 billion tons of oil, sufficient to meet current production rates for more than 50 years.
Foreign Investment Interest
Margulan Baibaturov, deputy chairman of the Geology Committee, noted that many of Kazakhstan's hydrocarbon fields were previously discovered in the Syrdarya basin. Demonstrating international interest, China's Hong Kong Sino-Science Oil and Gas Co., Ltd. (Geo-Jade Petroleum) plans to produce 1 trillion cubic meters of gas annually from the Sozak field. This venture is expected to generate up to $5 billion for Kazakhstan, with the company already investing over $3.2 billion in developing five fields within the country.
