Kazakhstan's Digital Nomad Program Offers Alternative Residency Path
Following stricter regulations for obtaining residency permits (VNZh) in Kazakhstan, foreigners are actively seeking alternative legalisation routes. One such pathway is the Digital Nomad Residency program offered by Astana Hub, specifically designed for IT professionals.
Streamlined Process for IT Specialists
The Digital Nomad Residency program offers significant advantages, notably exempting applicants from Kazakh language proficiency tests, proof of income, or interviews with migration police. This initiative, effective from February 2026, presents a distinct alternative to the tightened standard VNZh procedures.
Personal Experience and Application Journey
Ekaterina Melnikova, a Russian product designer working remotely from Kazakhstan for the past 1.5 years, shared her successful experience obtaining residency through this program on LinkedIn. Initially finding the standard VNZh process daunting, she was motivated to apply after learning about the Astana Hub initiative.
Automated Interviews and Document Submission
Candidates undergo an online selection process that includes an automated interview conducted by a voice robot, rather than a human. This AI-driven interview, which requires the camera to be on, is described as being similar to professional IT interviews. Successful candidates receive an application from Astana Hub and can then submit their documents via the eGov portal.
Melnikova noted that while her own VNZh process took approximately six months, it's possible to expedite certain stages, potentially reducing the timeline to as little as two months.
Target Audience and Important Considerations
The program primarily targets IT professionals, including developers, designers, analysts, and product managers. Given the current tightening of migration rules, it remains one of the most accessible avenues for obtaining residency.
Melnikova also advised that procedures can vary by region and recommended verifying specific details directly with migration authorities. She highlighted that online guides and official information may not always reflect the current on-the-ground reality.
Previously, reports indicated an increase in complaints from foreigners facing difficulties with VNZh applications in Kazakhstan. Russian and Ukrainian citizens, in particular, noted that document acceptance was limited to certain regions, often excluding major cities like Almaty and Astana, as well as southern areas.
