Rare Bear Cubs Born at Almaty Zoo, Adding to Endangered Species Efforts
The Almaty Zoo has welcomed a heartwarming addition to its family: two cubs of the rare Tian Shan brown bear have been born. This species is critically endangered and listed in Kazakhstan's Red Book, making this birth a significant event for conservation.
A New Generation of Endangered Bears
The new cubs are the fourth litter for their parents, Gerda and Kurmanbek. While they were born in January, they spent their initial weeks protected and nourished by their mother's milk. Now, under Gerda's watchful eye, the playful cubs are beginning to explore their surroundings.
Understanding the Tian Shan Brown Bear
The Tian Shan brown bear (Ursus arctos isabellinus) is a subspecies facing a high risk of extinction and is officially recognized in Kazakhstan's Red Book. These magnificent animals are native to the mountainous regions of southern and southeastern Kazakhstan. Hunting these bears has been prohibited since 1978, with their primary populations protected within reserves like the Aksu-Zhabagly Nature Reserve.
Community Involvement in Naming
In a delightful tradition, the Almaty Zoo is inviting the public to help name the new arrivals – a boy and a girl. This follows a recent successful breeding of Amur tiger cubs at the zoo, who were named Alan, Arlan, and Talan.
