US Backs Major Kazakhstan Highway Project: Karaganda-Zhezkazgan Road Gets Funding
A crucial infrastructure project in Kazakhstan, the highway connecting Karaganda and Zhezkazgan, has secured funding following an agreement signed in the United States. This development is set to enhance the nation's transportation network and economic ties.
The agreement was reached between JSC NC KazAvtoZhol, the International Bank for Reconstruction and Development, and the Asian Infrastructure Investment Bank. This collaboration marks a significant step forward for the ambitious road construction initiative.
Boosting Connectivity and Economy
The project aims to significantly improve Kazakhstan's transport infrastructure, increase its transit capabilities, and strengthen connections between its regions. The new highway is expected to drastically reduce travel times, enhance road safety, and provide a substantial boost to the economic development of Central Kazakhstan.
Project Details and Timeline
Construction of the 457-kilometer highway is slated to take place between 2025 and 2028. The total estimated cost for this extensive project is 650 billion tenge.
Currently, the tendering processes are nearing completion, with plans to commence design and construction work within the current year. This accelerated timeline underscores the project's importance.
Broader Infrastructure Initiatives
Beyond the Karaganda-Zhezkazgan highway, discussions also touched upon other key infrastructure initiatives. These include projects in the energy, water resources, and digitalization sectors, as well as the restoration of the northern part of the Aral Sea, the construction of the Beyneu-Saksaul highway, and the development of railway connections.
Particular attention was given to a national project focused on modernizing the energy and utility sectors, deemed essential for the country's sustained economic growth.
