Xi Jinping and Trump Discuss Avoiding the 'Thucydides Trap'

Chinese President Xi Jinping met with U.S. President Donald Trump in Beijing, highlighting the critical need for both nations to avoid the "Thucydides Trap" in their bilateral relationship.

A World in Transition

Xi Jinping described the current global landscape as one of profound change and instability. He emphasized that cooperation between Beijing and Washington is essential for overcoming global challenges and forging a new model for relations between major powers.

"Can China and the U.S. escape the 'Thucydides Trap' and create a new model for relations between major powers... these are questions posed by history, the world, and the people," Xi stated.

Understanding the 'Thucydides Trap'

The term "Thucydides Trap," popularized by political scientist Graham Allison, describes the dangerous tendency towards conflict when a rising power challenges an established one.

Navigating U.S.-China Relations

The Chinese President asserted that the common interests between China and the U.S. outweigh their disagreements, adding that the success of one nation can create opportunities for the other.

"The stability of China-U.S. relations benefits the world," Xi Jinping remarked.

For his part, President Trump expressed optimism that his visit to Beijing would improve relations between the two countries.

"We have had a very good relationship, and when difficulties have arisen, we have resolved them... We have a great future together," Trump said, calling it an honor to be in Beijing and to be Xi's "friend."

President Trump arrived in China on May 13th, with talks between him and President Xi Jinping commencing on May 14th. These discussions were anticipated to shape the future trajectory of U.S.-China relations, with high-ranking U.S. officials indicating that trade, investment, and issues concerning Iran were on the agenda.
