Eastern Kazakhstan Roads Deteriorate: Hundreds of Kilometers and Thousands of Signs Need Repair
The condition of roads and traffic signage in the Eastern Kazakhstan region has significantly deteriorated, with hundreds of kilometers of roadway and thousands of signs requiring urgent attention. This alarming situation was revealed following inspections by local police and road maintenance authorities.
Widespread Road Damage
Inspectors found extensive damage, including potholes and cracks, particularly on routes leading to popular tourist destinations like the Altai region. The road from Akhmirovo to Tavricheskoye was specifically highlighted as being in very poor condition. Driver Sergey Zyukov noted a direct correlation between road quality and the frequency of traffic accidents, emphasizing the critical need for repairs.
Addressing Quality and Warranty Issues
In the past year, specialists from the "National Center for Road Quality" mandated that contractors replace 4,500 square meters of asphalt that did not meet quality standards, at the contractor's own expense. In response to ongoing quality concerns, a decision was made this year to extend the warranty period for the maintenance of republican highways up to five years.
Enforcement and Future Proposals
Eldar Barykhanov, an inspector from the road technical inspection department of the Eastern Kazakhstan Regional Police Department, stated that over 10 directives were issued during the comprehensive inspection, focusing primarily on road surfaces, potholes, and other defects. Separately, Deputy Irina Smirnova has proposed exploring more cost-effective road construction methods for rural areas, suggesting the use of cement, gravel, sand, and local materials instead of traditional asphalt, which can be prohibitively expensive for widespread application.
