Cardiologist Warns of Deadly Sleep Disorders: Causes of Fatal Nighttime Events
Sleep is a vital period for bodily restoration, but for some, it can pose a significant threat to life. Cardiologist Andrey Kondrakhin has highlighted several dangerous conditions that can lead to fatal outcomes during sleep, stressing that these risks are not confined to older individuals but can affect people of all ages.
Hidden Dangers During Sleep
While we rest, our cardiovascular and respiratory systems undergo subtle yet complex changes. Dr. Kondrakhin points to heart rhythm disturbances as a primary cause of sudden death during sleep. These irregularities can manifest without warning, leading to critical health emergencies.
Blood Clots and Other Risks
Another serious concern identified by the doctor is thrombosis, or blood clotting. When blood clots obstruct vessels, it impairs oxygen and blood flow to vital organs, a particularly dangerous situation for individuals with pre-existing cardiovascular conditions. Additionally, conditions like gastroesophageal reflux, where stomach contents flow back into the esophagus, have been cited as potential causes of nighttime fatalities. Strokes occurring during sleep, leading to individuals not waking up, are also a grim possibility.
Breathing Issues and External Factors
Sleep apnea, characterized by temporary pauses in breathing during sleep, is another condition that should not be ignored. This can lead to severe oxygen deprivation and a rapid decline in health. Persistent snoring and frequent breathing interruptions are key indicators. Furthermore, factors such as alcohol intoxication, the effects of psychostimulants, or an overdose of sleeping medications can also contribute to fatal events during the night.
Preventive Measures
Dr. Kondrakhin cautions against relying solely on age as a factor, as sudden cardiac deaths can occur at any age. In younger individuals, these events may sometimes be linked to genetic predispositions. To mitigate these risks, he emphasizes the importance of annual medical check-ups, strict adherence to medical advice, maintaining a healthy lifestyle, and prioritizing sleep quality.
